The most popular among Spanish cocktails is obviously the Sangria. Traditionally made with red wine and chopped fruit, this alcoholic punch has gone through various experiments with red wine, orange juice, brandy etc. However, not a lot of people have heard of Zurracapote. This drink is similar to sangria in many ways and typical to the La Rioja and nearby areas of Spain. This drink can be had warm or chilled which is perfect for year round drinking!! We had some friends over to watch the final episode of season 7 of Game of Thrones and a large carafe of chilled Zurracapote was gone in minutes!

  • 1 bottle red wine (Spanish rioja)
  • 1 no. Orange sliced
  • Peel of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup dried apricots
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 tablespoon brown sugar

Heat the wine in a vessel on medium heat, with the orange, lemon peel, cinnamon, dried apricots, dried cranberries and sugar. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Take off the heat, bring to room temperature and then refrigerate.

Serve chilled on ice!
